Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a time for huge changes within the woman's body, not only physically and emotionally but spiritually too. Massage can really help to support this change that is occuring. Massage during pregnancy is relaxing, thereby reducing stress and creating balance in the body by encouraging a healthy, smooth functioning state characterised by steady blood pressure. Massage can encourage regular blood flow to the uterus, placenta and foetus. Circulatory problems like swelling or oedema, which can be particularly present in a pregnant lady, especially towards the later stages of her pregnancy, can be greatly reduced by effective swedish massage techniques and lymphatic drainage.

Massage is recommended after the first trimester and througout pregnancy and huge benefits have been noted of massage during labour. Some techniques can also be taught to the pregnant woman to use on herself to help reduce tearing during labour. Massage during and after pregnancy is not intended to replace appropriate pre and post natal care but support the pregnant woman's experience.

Pregnancy Massage is performed with the pregnant woman lying for the majority of the time on her left hand side (due to the venous flow), a shorter time on her right hand side and then the last 5-10 minutes sitting up in a reclining position, if this is comfortable for her.
